Championing Hip Hop dance for mental health
Co-created by Kyla Kikkawa and Tyrus Watson, Brain in Motion is a pilot community research project spotlighting the impacts of Hip Hop dance on mental health. Through an intervention and qualitative surveys, Brain in Motion will champion the power of Hip Hop dance in our St. Louis community and beyond.
Physical interventions are one of the most important ways we can show the impact of Hip Hop dance on physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.
Interviewing Hip Hop dancers in our region will also be a crucial aspect for showing love to our region, while acknowledging the impact that this dance has on expanding agency, perception of free will, and feelings of freedom.
An OG in the KRUMP and Hip Hop community in STL, and one of the most decorated street dancers in our region, Tyrus's love for R&B and deep connection to music and dance spans disciplines and deems him one of the coldest R&B DJs in the region.
First introduced to the greater STL dance community through KRUMP mentorship under X/O, Kyla is an arts administrator, community member, and advocate for the street dance community in STL. Originally from Southern California, Kyla works and lives in STL out of a deep love for the power of the people in the region.
